Viking Press/2003
Grade Level/ or Age Level:

SEEING SUGAR is  a realistic chapter book most likely to appeal to older elementary aged girls. Kate is an easy going fourth grader whoses life undergoes radical changes when a rival (from her perspective) enters the classroom. Kate starts out hating Sugar Rose, but by the book's end, she understands that looks can be deceiving. A concluding author's note mentions a website (of photography) created by the author. Photography is a subtext running through this tale. It hits home strongly not ploddingly that perspective and point of view have much to do with how we view people as friends or foes.
