Author (last name first): Trapani, Iza
Publisher, Date of Publication: Whispering Coyote/ 2002
Grade Level/ or Age Level: 2-3
Classification: Non-FictionIn this charming retelling of the 400 year old Scottish folk song, Froggie goes courting with a rose and chocolates by his side rather then a sward and pistol. He proposes marriage to a variety of young ladies including a mouse, a turtle, a bird, and a chipmunk, but all turn him down. He goes home a very dejected frog. The next morning by the creek he spies a lady frog who asks him to marry her. At last Froggie finds happiness. Trapani's detailed watercolor illustrations add to the humor and enjoyment of the story. The final double page spread shows the frog's wedding with the others who Froggie proposed to as bridesmaids. The book includes the music for the original verse with the new verses all printed on the same page. It would be a good lesson in music and folklore for a lower elementary school class.
