Gods & Heroes is a wonderful pop up book that has a niche audience. I suspect that routine handling would seriously destroy this book; however, in the hands of a reader who is already so entrance with world mythology anyway it may be treated delicately enough to not be quickly destroyed. Beyond the beauty of the pop ups that are centered on each 2 page spread, there are many movable small versions of gods and goddesses relevant to the discussion provided. For example, on the introduction to Egyptian mythology Anubis is the god who explodes off the page; in the corner of a page a small example of wedjet "whole one" hieroglyph is shown and a replica of Bastet, the cat-headed protector. World mythology covered includes Greek mythology, figures associated with the legend of Troy, Norse mythic figures etc... This book will probably result in curious readers wanting to read examples of the folk tale, etc... after seeing the visual hi-jinks depicted. While the very young may want to look at this book, keep in mind that the wonderful engineering necessary to create the figures will be quickly diminished if too much handling takes place.
